So after reading SSHE I started playing .50/1 on Party. I would just find ANY table with 9 people and sit down. After about 20 session I noticed that whenever I sat at a table that have an average pot over 9 or 9.50, somtimes 10+ (using Poker Tracker) I was normally losing. Yet EVERY table I sat at with an average pot over around 7 or so I was ALWAYS winning.
1. For those of you who have read SSHE, the tables with more action should be better, so what am I doing wrong?
2. In general, how do you choose a table if your only criteria can be pot size such as on Party? |

Hmmm... I dont know how much the pot size really matters. Poker Stars, from what I've heard and experianced seems to have less fish and better players overall than the other sites.
I have started to remember many of the regulars on Stars and there are some I avoid and some I try to play with.
Keep playing and see if the "stats" change for you, but IMO, pot size can be attributed to a lot of things...like poor starting hands where lots of folding occurs. This will make post seem small until a few good hands get dealt. |

There are "good" games and there are "manic" games.
Any game where the average pot is 10BB (big bets) or more is in the "manic" range. Lots of players and lots of raising.
Two things happen in a "manic" game. One is, even with proper play, you get more swings than in a more sedate game. So your stats may reflect that you had a bad swing to start out.
Second is that you have to adjust your play to the "manic" style. Perhaps your game is more suited to a more sedate game. 7BB avg pot is still a "good" game, and if you are profitable there, I would stay there (and look for games that are that level of action).
I tend to look at the "second tier" games, 7-8BB avg pot, because I do not like the "manic" games. |

Well said...they were definetely MANIAC games, 4 or 5 way capped action preflop...just no way to put a read on anyone or anything that is going on. I will defintely try to avoid those games from now on.
One more question, does anyone know how Party calculates the AVG pot size? I.e. over how many hands is that? The past 20? 30? |

| I play the 6-max tables, and they play a little more LAG than the full ring. The swings are DEFINITELY higher, but I have tightened up my starting hands and always keep position in mind, and have started winning again. Against the ram-and-jam (which I don't like) I have learned to be even MORE selective in hands played, but these guys WILL pay you off in the long run if you can remain patient. |
